State Quarters

Game 19, State Quarter Finals, Northeast (8-9-2)

1 November at FL Schlagle Stadium vs. Sumner Academy at 6:30 (1-0)

As we sought our 26th Final Four in program history (35 years) we finally lined up with our opening day lineup again as we welcomed back John Weinrich at centerback. We took on the one seed, 15-2-1 Sumner Academy.

It was quite a match as Sumner played to their seed, almost scoring twice, only to be turned away by two nice saves by Andrew Seger.

We had very few good opportunities, perhaps 4 or 5. Our goal illustrated good set-piece principles, but was just a wee bit lucky. Cooper got off a banger of a free kick, and Ethan did the smart thing of heading the ball back across the goal instead of heading towards goal from so far out. Swags got his foot on it, lifting it up and over the defense, and it went in, somehow. It was really an amazing effort by Anthony to get a foot on it at all.

We were having trouble stopping their nice builds out of the center in the second half when Hamms suggested we go double “6,” something we have used a lot at end of matches. Weasy was great again as they got absolutely zilch from that point on. That move, about midway through the second half, definitely helped us secure the win.

But Sumner was quite skilled and played like this match meant the world to them. They were impressive.

We, however, had cupcakes waiting for us after the game—they did not.

Most every other team struggled to get to the final four but all three favorites, Southwest, Newton and Maize South lasted.

We have got some work to do before Friday against Maize South. They are 19-0-0!
