For the EKL Title on Senior Night

 

Game 13 (8-2-3)
4 October at Home vs. BV Northwest at 7:15 (0-1)

EKL 2022 





Well, the stadium was perfectly decorated as we recognized our 14 seniors: Anthony Consuegra. Ethan Young. Jack Ruth. Barrett Kitts. Sebastian Taborda. Gabe Garcia. Carson Scheinkoenig. Connor Murray. Maxwell Leiker. Drew Weisner. John Kurgan. Will Fleming. Kellen Hulla.  Andrew Seger. Shoutout to our group of junior moms, headed by Mrs. Welsh and Mrs. Muckerman who put this thing together.  


Mrs. Gress was there snapping photo after photo. We heard unbelievable quotes, (some not from Gabe), after hearing of our seniors' accomplishments and plans.

But we could not score a goal no matter how hard we worked at it or how good of a shot we created. And, we were brilliant in the second half, just all over them.  (First half, I would lean towards their performance as the best).

Northwest did get three point blank tries in which Seger put one save after another on them. He was just fantastic tonight.  The lone goal came on a corner that Bobby came close to clearing off the line, but the AR said "oh no, that ball is over the line." I think Bobby has cleared 3-4 off the line this year so far—it's one of his specialties. 



We looked pretty much like the team that went to Iowa as we adjust to injuries and some distractions. We are pretty much the same team still, though,  we have been all year except with a lid over the goal. We generated 4 corners each half last night. In the second half we outshot them 9-1.  



And the match had highlights and good stories. Ethan ceremoniously placed the captain's band on Scheinkoenig during pregame. The all-senior starting (all but Welsh) lineup produce a very good opening shift, keeping the Huskies at zero and offering up a couple of shots. Kurgan had several nice plays at left back with Carson getting a ball wide right to start one of those attacks.



We definitely put ourselves behind the 8-ball in the EKL. We no longer can win the league, but we can still tie for the title if we can get a win over Blue Valley and get some help from BV Southwest against West.

We have Saint Thomas Aquinas' first soccer alumni game on Friday night at 6:00 that combines with our 810 Varsity Match on Saturday, now at 4:00, against Wichita Kapaun. 

3 regular season matches to go; let's win them all.

Game 10 (8-0-2) 29 September at RecPlex in Burlington vs. Peoria Notre Dame at 3:30 (3-2, Shootout (5-4)) Boys Stats EKL 2022   What a match the opening round created. Peoria Notre Dame, who last Tuesday was 12-0 and ranked 3rd in the country, had dropped a match and tied a match the rest of the week—but they were quality. We came out pretty fired up and had some great early attacks, but after a couple of posts and a couple of soft shots, we still stood at nil after 7 minutes. And then our defensive center midfielder, Gabe Garcia, just got rocked. The Notre Dame kid received a yellow card and Gabe received a concussion. He will miss the rest of the tournament, maybe more. We thought our heads dropped a bit after losing Gabe, and it took us the rest of the half to really work out how we would adjust the lineup.  We started second half with Murray at the "6" and Hulla wide right. State Semi-Finals

Game 20: (8-10-2) 4 November vs. Maize South at 5:00 at Hummer (2-3) Boys Stats We took on undefeated, 19-0, Maize South in the State Semi Finals. They had beaten us last year in the same game, 2-1. Well this year we fell in just a thriller of a  match, 3-2. It was a match that it looked as if we were about to win, then not, then perhaps, then not, but wait, no.  We went with a double “6,” with Weisner and Garcia, holding them to nil for the first 66 minutes. Then we lost our centerback,  John Weinrich, to an injury for the rest of the match. They put 3 in on us in the next 10 minutes. (So yes, John was kind of an important piece of that plan.) To the boys credit, we came back to tie it up quickly after they went ahead, 2-1. But we allowed one of their known-for counters to make the final score.  Despite with only about three minutes remaining after their go-ahead third goal, we got 2-3 excellent chances after that. Stripe Out for ALS

Game 1: (1-0-0) 26 August vs. St. James at Saint Thomas Aquinas (3-0) Boys Stats EKL 2022 It was, yet another, cool BWhite Event. Stripe Out for ALS with its emphasis on the Whigham and Hopfinger families will be hard to top. As both families were receiving special recognition from PA Announcer, Leo Brown, both teams executed the, now, traditional walk-out through the crowd and on to the field. After the prayer, followed by the STA choir performing the Star Spangled Banner live, and the introductions, we always stop for the joint picture, including all the players and coaches from both teams intermixed throughout. It's a cool moment. And then we play soccer. All that was good. We honestly were all over the Thunder statistically for the entire match, even when we were playing 10 vs. 11 after a somewhat, odd, red card had been given to our keeper ( Check it Out ).  But the ball was not on the turf enough, so although St. James had probably one legit chance to score late after we turn
