"Saints Tame Mustangs" (Hammons post game)

 

Game 9 (7-0-2)
27 September at Home vs. BV North at 7:00 (4-0)





This was a key win for us. BV North has been having a very good season (Metro Poll #23), and they have an elite keeper who can keep them in any game. But we were able to go across him with corners and free kicks and box and t-balls. We were very proud of the boys' execution. At half, we were up 4-0! After 22 minutes, it was still nil, nil.


Even in the second half with Weasy taking the left-footed corner, we just created another golden opportunity with Murray's front post flick past the keeper to an open back-post header, but we did not direct it down for the easy goal. Still, great opportunity, good attack. Check it out!

We also got significant playing time for our non-starters in the second half, and they kept the Mustangs corralled, holding them scoreless. The Stangs did create a couple of good opportunities in one of their late second half possessions but George Guagliano was up to the challenge, coming up with a big save. (Check it out!)

I loved scoring on those 3 set pieces, but Consuegra's box-ball to Max was just one great goal. 

And as Ethan noted Cooper "hit for the cycle" with a goal, an assist, and a yellow card. Well Done!



We head to Iowa Thursday for 3 very, very tough matches. Tonight was a big win to help set up, for what we hope is, a great weekend.

Game 10 (8-0-2) 29 September at RecPlex in Burlington vs. Peoria Notre Dame at 3:30 (3-2, Shootout (5-4)) Boys Stats EKL 2022   What a match the opening round created. Peoria Notre Dame, who last Tuesday was 12-0 and ranked 3rd in the country, had dropped a match and tied a match the rest of the week—but they were quality. We came out pretty fired up and had some great early attacks, but after a couple of posts and a couple of soft shots, we still stood at nil after 7 minutes. And then our defensive center midfielder, Gabe Garcia, just got rocked. The Notre Dame kid received a yellow card and Gabe received a concussion. He will miss the rest of the tournament, maybe more. State Semi-Finals

Game 20: (8-10-2) 4 November vs. Maize South at 5:00 at Hummer (2-3) Boys Stats We took on undefeated, 19-0, Maize South in the State Semi Finals. They had beaten us last year in the same game, 2-1. Well this year we fell in just a thriller of a  match, 3-2. It was a match that it looked as if we were about to win, then not, then perhaps, then not, but wait, no.  We went with a double “6,” with Weisner and Garcia, holding them to nil for the first 66 minutes. Then we lost our centerback,  John Weinrich, to an injury for the rest of the match. They put 3 in on us in the next 10 minutes. (So yes, John was kind of an important piece of that plan.) To the boys credit, we came back to tie it up quickly after they went ahead, 2-1. But we allowed one of their known-for counters to make the final score.  Despite with only about three minutes remaining after their go-ahead third goal, we got 2-3 excellent chances after that. Stripe Out for ALS

Game 1: (1-0-0) 26 August vs. St. James at Saint Thomas Aquinas (3-0) Boys Stats EKL 2022 It was, yet another, cool BWhite Event. Stripe Out for ALS with its emphasis on the Whigham and Hopfinger families will be hard to top. As both families were receiving special recognition from PA Announcer, Leo Brown, both teams executed the, now, traditional walk-out through the crowd and on to the field. After the prayer, followed by the STA choir performing the Star Spangled Banner live, and the introductions, we always stop for the joint picture, including all the players and coaches from both teams intermixed throughout. It's a cool moment. And then we play soccer. All that was good. We honestly were all over the Thunder statistically for the entire match, even when we were playing 10 vs. 11 after a somewhat, odd, red card had been given to our keeper ( Check it Out ).  But the ball was not on the turf enough, so although St. James had probably one legit chance to score late after we turn
